Milton Glaser

Laura Michalski

Milton Glaser, also known as the modern Renaissance man and Picasso of Art, was born in and raised in New York in 1929.  He was a student the High School of Music and Art and Cooper Union Art School.  He received a Fulbright Scholorship and went to study in Bologna, Italy at the Academy of Fine Arts.   He worked under Giorgio Morandi for eight months.   He went back to Italy and studied lithography at a later period.  He devoted most of his life to being a designer.   His style varies depending upon which medium he is using.  He has been known to be very primitive and also very avante garde.  His designs range from apparel to books and magazines.

Ever since he began his career, Milton Glaser has been an involved in both the design and education communities.  “He has been an instructor and a Board Member at the School of Visual Arts, New York since 1961, and is on the Board of Directors at The Cooper Union, New York,” (CSD, August/September, 1999 — "Milton Glaser: Always One Jump Ahead" by Patrick Argent), which sort of gave him a foot in the door.   In 1954, Milton Glaser founded Push Pin Studio, with the help of a few classmates from Cooper Union; Reyonld Ruffins, Seymour Chwast, and Edward Sorel.  For twenty years Glaser and Seymour Chwast, ran an organization, which had a powerful influence on the direction of world graphic design, their last exhibit was an exhibition at the Louvres Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris.  Glaser is also designed and illustrated more than 300 posters for clients in the areas of publishing, music, theater, film, institutional and civic enterprise, and commercial products and services.

His work has been featured in museums all over the world.  He did one-man shows at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Lincoln Center Gallery, New York; and the Houghton Gallery at The Cooper Union, New York. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; the National Archive, Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C.; and the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, New York. He won The Society of Illustrator's Gold Medal, the St. Gauden's Medal from The Cooper Union, and the Prix Savignac for the World's Most Memorable Poster of 1996, and is a member of The Art Director's Club Hall of Fame.

He founded New York Magazine with Clay Felker in 1968.  The magazine discussed tourist attractions and cheap restaurants in New York.  He established Milton Glaser, Inc. in 1974, and teamed with Walter Bernard in 1983 to form the publication design firm WBMG.  Although Glaser was very rare and innovative, he was still imitated quite often by other artists.  His most imitated design is his I Love NY logo,  from New York Magazine, which very famous and well-known.

During the 1950s, Glaser was influenced by oriental calligraphy.  Oriental calligraphy is much similar to painting.  It uses Chinese characters to communicate the spiritual world of the artist.  Glaser made gestural silhouette drawings out of gauche.  The drawings were meant to be simple to leave more to the viewer’s imagination.

In the 1960s he was influenced by flat shapes and contour lines.  He used color from adhesive color films. These designs were similar to comic books and contemporary Pop Art.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Glaser was influenced by illusions. He used geometric shapes in an abstract way.  In 1987, he designed the Rainbow Room complexes for the Rockefeller Center. Also in 1987, Mr. Glaser designed the World Health Organization's International AIDS symbol and poster and, in 1993, he created the logo for Tony Kushner's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Angels in America.”  In the Philadelphia area, Mr. Glaser's projects have included Sesame Place, in 1981–1983, and Franklin Mills Mall, in 1986–1989.

In recent years, he helped design logos and the architecture of restaurants, an observation deck, and a permanent exhibition for the World Trade Center in the World Trade in the New York City.  He is also a present design consultant to Stony Brook University, Lands’ End Direct Merchants, Schlumberger Ltd., Bruegger’s Bagels and a number of other businesses.

Milton Glaser is now 77-years-old and he is still doing what he loves.  He is presently working in New York City, creating new ideas every day.  Although he may not be so young, his ideas and designs are still very popular in today’s culture.  He helped his fellow New Yorkers deal with the September 11th attacks with his famous “I Love NY” design, which he redid and made it better.  This design will never go out of style, especially in New York.  New York will never forget Milton Glaser because of all the contributions he has made to and is still continuing to make in New York.  This is a man who is truly proud to be a New Yorker and proud to be an American.

The Invention That Failed

The sun Pod was supposed to fan you from the sun and act as an outdoor tanning bed. Unfortunately, it pretty much turned into an oven regardless of how much the person inside was fanned.

Notebook Cooler

topbackfans

The notebook cooler has fans in it so the laptop won't overheat, therefore it can be left on longer. It is essential for when you're up all night typing a paper.

Root Boots

Now fashion is going green with these new root boots. Michelle Mayer, who created them said she collected bark from various parks and glued it all together to make boots. When she walks in them it makes a sound like the roots are getting teared out from the Earth. This is a reminder to people to stop hurting the Earth and save it from being harmed.

Logictech Harmony PS3 Remote Adapter

The remote works by first syncing to your PlayStation 3. Then it takes in IR blasts from your remote and translates them to Bluetooth commands. Then,"all you have to do is re-add the PlayStation 3 to your Logitech Harmony profile and it will automatically import the correct IR codes to your remote;" how efficient. (gizmodo.com) It can control a Blu-ray movie, a DVD and a DivX video from just the buttons on my Harmony.

LED Keyboard

A Keyboard That's Too Good to Be True. Really.

The LED Keyboard is an illuminated keyboard which projects onto a tabletop. It makes it easier for the person sing the computer so they don't have to carry around a keyboard. Although, this design sounds great, it is too good to be true because "Let me tell you: they’re not usable. The first problem is that you can’t feel the keys. So you have to stare down at your hands nonstop. The second problem is that your fingers actually block the light, so you have to keep pulling your hands away to see where the virtual keys are supposed to be falling." This finger moves and operates exactly like a real finger. It senses the movement of the stump and moves with it. It is not even like an artificial finger at all.

The I.S. Hurricane Protection System

Impactsheild protects homes from hurricanes by storing fabric inside a weather resistant covering. What happens is, if the window is hit hard enough by some sort of pressure, the fabric deploys and protects the window. It also is not that bad-looking either. It is kind of like an airbag for your house!

Indigenious Lock

Finally, there is now a lock that never has to be changed. The indigenious lock changes can open up to 256 keys, which comes with the lock (I assume). It makes it easier for the home owner because they won't have to deal with the hassle of changing their locks and spending money on a locksmith.

Salad Shooter

The salad shooter does exactly what it's called, it shoots salad. First the salad and all its ingredients are poured into the top of the devices and then they are chopped and shot out into the bowl. The salad comes out like a professional cook made it.

Jeff Miller has proven that wood can be flexible as long as it is being used, such as his new invention of the flexible coat rack. The weight from the coats allow the wood to be flexible so they are less likely to fall off. This coat rack can be a creative alternative to the traditional closet hanger.

Muscle-Fatigue Blocker

Andrew Marks, a student at Columbia Universtiy has discovered muscle-fatigue is, in fact, not caused by the build up of lactic acid in the muscles. "Muscle-fibre cells contract when calcium ions are released inside them, under the control of ion channels called ryanodine receptors.
Now, a growing body of evidence suggests that fatigue is actually related to how these calcium ions are released and processed."(Justin Mullins, New Scientist consultant), so basically, an athlete's performance has a lot to do with how ryanodine receptors process calcium ions. He has created a drug which can prevent muscle-fatigue. To learn more visit: http://www.newscientist.com/blog/invention

Core77 Review

Vestergaard-Frandsen is a company which made a an instrument that filters out water.  This instrument is called Life straw.  It is designed to put it directly into the water and drink the water out of it.  There's no need to boil the water to get rid of an toxins because there is a pre-filter which has holes small enough to filter out almost everything, the holes are 100 microns in diameter.  What ever is not filtered out, gets filtered through the polyester filter which has even smaller holes than the pre-filter, these holes are 15 microns in diameter.  The water is then impregnated with iodine to kill an parasites.  The last chamber the water passes through has granulated carbon to improve the taste and smell of water.

Gianni Versace

VERSACEDEPARTMENT
Gianni Versace is a great fashion pioneer who combined the worlds of high style and popular culture. A charismatic and accomplished designer of clothing and theater costumes, he was influenced by Andy Warhol and modern abstract art. He also appreciated a range of historic attires, which he incorporated in his creations. Greek and Roman classic designs, 18th and 19th century gowns and the styles of the 1920's and 1930's were innovatively wed to new materials such as plastic, leather and metal mesh.Versace has been referred to as the rock-and-roll designer and clients include Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen, George Michael, Eric Clapton, Elton John and Michael Jackson. He has also made clothes for the Princess of Wales and Caroline of Monaco. In 1982, Versace opened a new chapter in his career, making costumes for the theatre, opera and ballet. He began a close collaboration with choreographer Maurice Bejart. He went on to design accessories, jewellery, furnishings, and china. In 1998 the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of New York held an exhibition of Gianni Versace's creations, from the ultra-classic to the cool and modern. His flair and daring will always be remembered.

Versace Family Notes

THE VERSACE FAMILY
COMING SOON!
High fashion and high drama go hand in manicured hand in the Versace house. From humble beginnings to fashion icons, with a hefty dose of tragedy along the way.

THE VERSACE FAMILY

“Fashion till death” could be the Versace family motto. The creative genius of Gianni made his family kings and queens of the glitterati world.

Santo and Donatella and Gianni Versace grew up in Calabria, Italy. As Gianni learnt his craft from his dressmaker mother, Donatella played his creative muse. As a precocious child of 11, she was already dying her hair blonde and wearing her brother’s designs.

Work as a knitwear designer took Gianni to Florence in the mid 1970s. Donatella followed. While she studied Italian literature at university, she would hang out with her brother and his fashion crowd at the weekends.

Gianni moved on to Milan and Donatella once again followed. The plan was for her to work as Gianni’s PR agent when he launched his company in 1978. But that plan was quickly scrapped, the designer preferring his sister as a muse and critic.

Gianni’s’ brutal murder in 1997 left his bereaved sister at the head of the multi-million fashion house. Three months after Gianni’s death, Donatella turned out a ready-to-wear collection, followed by a mainline collection the following spring.

Since the death of Gianni, the Versace company has seen its value halve to 250 million. In July 2004, Donatella was admitted to a rehab clinic in an attempt to rid her of her cocaine addiction.

She last appeared in public at the Versace men’s show in June 2006, very thin and wearing a wig or hair extensions. It is believed her hair has fallen out as a result of her addiction.

Donatella is married to former male model Paul Beck with whom she has a son, Daniel, and a daughter, Allegra. After her uncle's death, it was Allegra, then aged 11, who inherited the most part of his fortune, including a 45 per cent share in the Versace family business. Beck is in charge of Versace's advertising.

Rough Draft of Versace

Versace was founded in 1978. It is a family-run business. The Versaces are from Reggio Calabria. The company's headquarters are located in Milan, Italy. Versace manufactures high-end apparel, make-up, accessories, fragrances and home furnishings. The CEO of Versace is Santo Versace and the vice president is his sister, Donatella Versace. His unique designs were a huge success he won a number of awards such as Occhio d'Oro Award, Milan 1982, 1984, 1990, 1991 Cutty Sark Award 1983, 1988 and the Council of Fashion Designers of America International Award 1993. The Versace company is set up in teams. Each team is in charge designing a different line. The lines are called Gianni Versace Couture, Versace Jeans Couture, Versace Home Collection, Versus and Versace Collection. Versace also operates a hotel, the Palazzo Versace. Gianni Versace Couture consists of high-end apparel, accessories, make-up, home furnishing and fragrances. Versace Jeans Couture is high-end but casual. Andy Warhol and modern abstract art. Versace also was influenced by Greek and Roman classic designs of the 18th and 19th century. VErsace's love for opera and theater played a role in his designs as well. Versace took 18th and 19th century gowns and make them out of various materials such as plastic, metal mesh and leather. Versace has eighty-one boutique locations worldwide. Versace is also featured in 123 retail areas in a variety of luxury multi-designer department stores such as Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and Saks Fifth Avenue. "Since then, the collection of Versace timepieces has evolved and the range of products of the Medusa fashion brand has greatly been expanded." (wikipedia.com). "Versace has been referred to as the rock-and-roll designer and clients include Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen, George Michael, Eric Clapton, Elton John and Michael Jackson." (http://www.raffaello-network.com/raffties/gianni-versace.html). Council of Fashion Designers of America International Award 1993 Gianni Versace was killed by Andrew Cunanan on July 15, 1997. [edit]Versace lines

There are several lines which make up Versace Group (pronounced Versache). They are: Gianni Versace Couture), Versace Jeans Couture, Versace Home Collection, Versus and Versace Collection. In addition to clothing and accessories, it also operates a hotel, the Palazzo Versace.

Gianni Versace Couture, which contains high-end, often handmade apparel, jewellery, watches, fragrances, cosmetics and home furnishings, is the House's main line. Traditionally, this is the only line presented on the runway which is shown during Milan's fashion week, but this has not been strictly the case in recent years. Couture dresses in this line may cost about $10,000 and suits cost approximately $5,000. Donatella Versace directly heads this line and designs a vast amount of the items. Many of the accessories and home furnishings are licenced through Rosenthal and other

Versace Jeans Couture, a casual clothing line, focuses on informal clothing: high-end denim and classic Gianni Versace print shirts. It is readily available and comparably affordable. This line is distributed through 56 boutiques and flagship stores, and 1800 multi-brand points of sale, including Internet-based shops. Versace Sport comprises activewear and accessories. The name often printed on t-shirts.

Versace has taken the fashion industry by storm the last few years with Donatella's independent, strong woman inspired collection, but at the same time making it look sexy, fierce, and chic. Versace has a very wide band of A list celebrities and models supporting Versace as well as

[edit]Versace going public

In May 2006, it was reported in WWD that Versace chief executive Giancarlo Di Risio said Versace Group would consider an IPO (initial public offering) on the stock market by next year, ahead of a proposed schedule. This was due to a drop in operating losses from £62m to £4m for 2005, based on sales for the House during the prior 12 months.

[edit]Faces of Versace & celebrity culture

Versace has many fans among well-known celebrities. Elton John has long been a wearer of Versace, often featuring custom items covered in diamonds or Swarovski crystal. Other notables fans of the Versace fashion house are BeyoncéElizabeth HurleyAxl Rose and the late Princess Diana, who was offered, but declined, £1,000,000 to appear on the catwalk in Versace to celebrate her divorce from Prince Charles. The late Rap artist Tupac Shakur was also a Versace model and other rappers have been known to name drop Versace quite often, e.g. The Notorious B.I.G.

Jennifer Lopez is known to wear Versace in many of her red carpet fashions. Many of the dresses that Lopez has worn have brought much publicity to the fashion house. Lopez wore one of these dresses to the 2000 Grammys, which became infamous for its plunging neckline.

Versace is unique among Italian fashion houses due to its frequent use of a celebrity "face" for the House in advertisements. The contract provides for the use of the celebrity's image, and in return, the celebrity is paid both monetarily and with free Versace clothing. Madonna, for example, was paid $10.5m and given free Versace clothes for 2 years for her contribution to Versace advertising campaign in 2005.

Some of the celebrities that have been the face "for Versace" are Madonna (1995 and 2005), Ashton Kutcher (known from Punk'd), Kevin Richardson (former member of The Backstreet Boys), Demi MooreBritney Spears, and Christina Aguilera. During the summer of 2003, The Corrs--who were then recording and promoting their fourth studio album--signed a contract to become the face of Versace for 5 years. Halle Berry was the face of Versace for Spring/Summer 2006.

Versace used the models Carolyn MurphyAngela LindvallDaria WerbowyMiriam Escott IVChristy TurlingtonGisele Bündchen and Kate Moss to front the Fall/Winter 2006/7 campaign, and used actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the face for the men's campaign. The 2008 Spring/Summer campaign features Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey as the face of its men's line. Many young models featured as the lineup for Versace include Tuki BrandoGraham Love and Joel West.
